Weber Antonio Neves Amaral

Weber A. Neves do Amaral, a Brazilian national, obtained his Ph.D. and M.A. degrees from Harvard University, USA. He also holds a Master of Sciences degree from the University of Sao Paulo (USP), Brazil. His research and professional interests are in the areas of innovation, sustainability, bioenergy and bioproducts and public policies. Currently he is supporting the State of Sao Paulo Secretary of Development and the city of Piracicaba for the implementation of the Bioenergy Technological Park in Piracicaba, SP, Brazil.

He is a professor at the University of São Paulo (, ESALQ, Brazil. Prior to his current assignment at the University of Sao Paulo, he was an Assistant Professor, Agronomy and Forestry at the State University of Sao Paulo (UNESP: from 1989 to 1996.

He is also a partner at Venture Partners do Brazil, a consultancy and investment company in Sao Paulo, SP ( was the founder and formerly the CEO of the Brazilian Center for Biofuels (2005-2008). He was also a Senior Scientist at the International Plant Genetic Resources Institute, IPGRI (, based in Rome, coordinating the Global Forest Resources Project.

His professional career included working as a researcher in Plant Genetics and Breeding and head of the Research Department of the company Votoratin Celulose s/a in Brazil. Weber Neves do Amaral has been a consultant for the Brazilian government, member of the International Advisory Group of the Pilot Programme on Tropical Rain Forests (PPG7), CEPAL, FAO, UNCTAD – Biotrade Programme, Brazilian Fund for Biodiversity (FUNBIO), NGOs and private sector. He speaks fluent Portuguese, English, Spanish and Italian.
