Has a bachelor degree in Applied Mathematics – University of São Paulo (1974), Master and Ph.D. degrees in Atmospheric Sciences – Colorado State University (1977 and 1979). Presently is member of the Working Group 2 of the Intergovernamental Panel on Climate Change, member of the Scientific Steering Group of ileaps - International Geosphere Atmosphere Program, member of the Scientific Steering Committee of LBA – Large Scale Biosphere Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia, fellow of the American Meteorological Society, member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and Full Professor of the Department of Atmospheric Sciences of the Institute of Astronomy, Geophysics and Atmospheric Sciences of the University of São Paulo. In the recent past has been vice-President of the International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences, Director of the Center for Weather Forecasts and Climate Studies (Centro de Previsão de Tempo e Estudos Climáticos – CPTEC) of the National Institute for Space Research (INPE), President of the Exectutive Council of the Inter American Institute for Global Change Research e vice-Director of the Institute of Astronomy, Geophysics and Atmospheric Sciences of the University of São Paulo. Has received the “comenda da Ordem do Mérito Científico” from the Ministry of Science and Technology and “Prêmio Adalberto Serra” from the Brazilian Meteorological Society. She was President and Scientific Director of the Brazilian Meteorological Society. Her field of work is in Meteorology working with rainfall, cloud microphysics, thunderstorms, aerosol-cloud interactions, biosphere-atmosphere interactions, urban effects on rainfall and local circulations with a focus on tropical and subtropical regions of South America. Has published 97 scientific journal articles, 15 book chapters, and has advised 28 Master and 16 Doctorate students.
